Do you want to help us shape what the future of work will look like and how it will best embrace our life's aspirations? If this sounds like a journey you want to embark on, we may have the right role for you! PayFit is an intuitive cloud-based payroll and employee management solution designed specifically for SMBs. Since 2015, we have set ourselves a mission to simplify payroll for SMBs and enable employers and employees to grow together. We are a European company operating from 3 main countries (France, Spain, and the UK) where we are supporting over 15,000 clients.
Creating a fulfilling work environment and culture is also a core mission at PayFit, and our day-to-day work philosophy is reflected in our four values:
Care: We genuinely care for others whoever they are, whatever they think.
Excellence: We aim to improve and achieve better results every day.
Humility: Staying humble and exchanging transparent feedback helps us to grow and improve.
Passion: We are the architects of PayFit's success.
A key part of our culture, and essential for our success, is also improving the diversity of our teams and building an inclusive culture where you can be yourself at work.
This is why our recruitment focuses on the skills you demonstrate, and not only on your academic background or previous professional experiences. At PayFit we understand that you can gain applicable skills through a variety of life experiences and we are interested in knowing them, too.
Position Overview :
You will join the Platform tribe as Staff Engineer, and will help scale PayFit’s organization while maintaining quality of execution.
PayFit is transitioning progressively towards a more decoupled architecture, embracing event-driven and following the principles of DDD as the most efficient way to continue to deliver and increase our value proposition iteratively. This also fits in our long-term architecture vision, and relies on a strong internal platform to enable product teams to deliver values in an efficient way.
We scale our observability and reliability capabilities to empower the organization to discover its system improvement opportunities and prioritize them holistically.
We strive to surface actionable KPIs and SLOs to healthily operate and evolve PayFit products for a variety of stakeholders, either technical, product, or business-oriented.
We provide tools, guidelines, knowledge, and policies to deliver and evolve sustainable products.
Key responsibilities :
You will take into consideration constraints of observability, scalability, and performance to drive the evolution of PayFit’s SaaS architecture. This involves:
- Leading critical cross-functional initiatives with a systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with strong communication skills, and a sense of ownership
- Collaborating across the whole engineering organization in the prioritization of actions and setting up an actionable strategy to get there: delivering software to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of PayFit's services
- Building a culture of technical excellence: data-driven decisions, best practices, incremental delivery, continuous improvements, and ownership
- Mentoring and training your peers on design techniques and coding standards, and cultivating innovation and collaboration across multiple teams
- Trust & Responsibility: Enjoy significant freedom to pick the right topics to address, relying on your expertise and skills to make context-driven decisions that are impactful.
Within the Platform tribe, and more specifically along the Internal Developer Experience team that you would work closely with, this also goes along:
- Empowering platform users and driving platform evolutions based on feedback: work with multiple teams on platform-related topics – may it be teams using the platform, or the multiple teams delivering it
- Providing the right infrastructure building blocks: infrastructure tools and libraries that help product teams deploy services easily, efficiently, and most importantly, autonomously
- Design solution to improve our delivery pipelines, helping improve our current Continuous Delivery setup
- Migrate PayFit's workloads towards ARM, with everything that goes along may it be at the build chain level or runtime level
- Get away from legacy systems that are entangled in our whole stack towards better alternatives – i.e. replacing our home-made job scheduler based on NSQ by direct usage of SQS and code-level logic
- Involve in moving all applications toward service mesh in order to get mutual authentication, more observability, etc.
- Contribute to the last miles of our migration of our home-made reverse proxy in Golang by LBs / API Gateway managed by AWS which is ongoing and will unlock more improvements once over
- Make it so we can get a centralized schema registry for teams, eventually along with some libraries, to ease plugging on existing events
Examples of topics that could be encompassed by this role as of early-2025:
Our Tech stack
Technically speaking, here is the stack that you will be working with (might evolve as time goes ): while it also evolves as time goes of course:
- Code: 95% TypeScript / 5% of Golang
- Back-end: mostly NestJS
- Front-end: React
- Build: nx
- Runtime: 60% Kubernetes (AWS EKS) / 40% AWS Lambda
- Continuous Integration: 90% CircleCI / 10% GitHub Actions
- Infrastructure-as-code: OpenTofu stacks applied through Spacelift for most of the infrastructure, AWS SAM for lambdas and the resources around them.
- Observability: 100% Datadog
- Code hosting: 100% GitHub
- Full-blown AWS-based architecture. No pursuit of a mythical “multi-cloud” agnosticism
- Data storage: depending on actual needs, but so far mostly MongoDB (both self-hosted & through MongoDB Atlas), PostgreSQL through AWS RDS/Aurora, Redis through AWS ElastiCache, AWS OpenSearch, and AWS DynamoDB
- More and more messaging systems (AWS SQS / SNS / EventBridge) and usage of AWS Lambda & Step Functions, as per our ongoing transition toward a more event-driven architecture
Of course, such a stack is deemed to evolve as time goes on.
As the above list most likely shows, we happily rely on third parties over trying to manage everything ourselves, preferring to spend time on specific close-to-product matters than on infrastructure & tools maintenance.
